10. Demonstration Videos

Ok, now that we have built our 3D cube we will use this page to put up some videos of what we have programmed it to do.

Here is the first - it's a square drawing program...

The cube was being controlled by a PICAXE 28X2 module which is virtually completely self-contained and costs only £11.99 (and the programming editor is free although you'll have to but a programming cable).

We wrote the code in two steps - the first was a subroutine which would put a cube of lit LEDs of any defined size anywhere in the matrix that we chose.  Then we wrote a routine which simply moved it around.

More to come...

  1. Hi, I have bought a similar cube. I have soldered all the bits and pieces. Somehow I just cant seem to power up. Well without the 512 LEDs, when I turn it on, the small LEDs lighted up for say 10 secs and than dissappeared. Will u be able to help me with this?

    1. Which of the two plug-in modules are you using?

    1. Hi Bart, might be a bit late now but for anyone else - measure the pin spacing on the main PCB. They are 23mm (squared), so use the same for the spacing on the jig.

Note: if you're going to order one of these you can buy the pre-made jig as well! Either contact him on his eBay account, or the kit + jig can be brought from his Aliexpress store.

  6. If (like me) find the surface mount soldering a bit too tricky checkout www.eimodule.com.
More expensive but it's exactly the same Main PCB kit (including both standalone and pc modules) detailed in this blog and you can still build the LED matrix.
(Tip: He sells on eBay and was 25% cheaper than the website prices)

Everyone asking about the software read the build instructions (on the EIModule website which are in english) at the bottom of the PDF there's a link.
    http://www.eimodule.com/EIM402_LED_Cube_Material_C01.rar

Note: I found the EIM build instructions "PCB to LED red wires" are the wrong way around, so it runs up side down. Follow the wiring pictured on this blog.

This is not in anyway an endorsement for EIModules, i'm just a happy customer (do checkout his eBay feedback).
